Haters gonna hate.

I felt the need to wonder aloud why everyone seems so bent out of shape over this whole new cover of J.K. Rowling's next book The Casual Vacancy. 

In case you've missed the bazillion tweets about it and blogs displaying it, here it is again:

Now, my first thought was... Okay. JK Rowling's new book is clearly Gryffindor.

My second thought was... the synopsis doesn't sound that great.

But I don't necessarily hate the cover. I mean, sure it's a little... minimalist, but not bad. I mean, some of my favorite books of all time have very simple covers. For example:

But the lack of color and drama that usually graces the cover of novels doesn't make me hate this new book. 

I mean sure, if I was shopping in a book store, it wouldn't make me necessarily jump to try and read it.

However, it's not like J.K. Rowling has to try and appeal to fans. She already has a fan base. Millions of people will read her new novel whether or not it's good and whether or not the cover is Gryffindor.

Do people hate it because after such a crazy build up of Harry Potter adventuredom, they want to be WOW-ed and reassured again that the author of their favorite childhood protagonist wont let them down?

Or do people want an extravagant cover to make up for the lack of appeal in the novel's description?

Tell me.

The Nightmare Affair

I was beyond excited yesterday to hear about the novel The Nightmare Affair by Mindee Arnett.

Here is the synopsis from Goodreads:

16-year-old Dusty Everhart breaks into houses late at night, but not because she’s a criminal. No, she’s a Nightmare. Literally. Dusty is a magical being who feeds on human dreams.

Being the only Nightmare at Arkwell Academy, a boarding school for magickind, and living in the shadow of her mother’s infamy is hard enough. But when Dusty sneaks into Eli Booker’s house, things get a whole lot more complicated. He’s hot, which means sitting on his chest and invading his dreams couldn’t get much more embarrassing. But it does. Eli is dreaming of a murder. The setting is Arkwell.

Now the Dusty has to follow the clues--both within Eli’s dreams and out of them--to stop the killer before more people turn up dead. And before the killer learns what she’s up to and marks her as the next target.

Could this novel sound any more amazing! The answer is no! I literally can't wait.

I thoroughly believe that anyone in the world will love this novel. I finished feeling good about myself and empowered to make good changes in the world and in myself. I strongly recommend reading this book.

Meet Stargirl Caraway. She’s a mysterious, happy go lucky, and unique girl living in an all too familiar cookie-cutter world.

She’s compassionate, considerate, and goes the extra mile for everyone… Which is why the people in her school don’t understand her. She is written off as weird. Bizarre.

Stargirl doesn’t notice..at first. She goes on to serenade people with her ukulele on their birthdays, wear strange clothing to school, and cheer for her school and their rivals during games.
But Stargirl isn’t obvious. Soon she starts to see the differences between herself and the others around her. In fact, she sees more than most humans do in a lifetime. Stargirl just believes in following her heart, which is harder to do that we’d all like to admit.

Follow Stargirl as she learns, grows, and falls in love in this amazing novel that teaches that though it’s not easy, it’s always important to be true to oneself.

SUNDAY NIGHT.

I just finished reading "A Tale Dark and Grimm" by Adam Gidwitz.

All I can say is WOW.

The entire book is written in third person, such as any age old fairy tale. It follows Hansel and Gretel through multiple fairy tales that intertwine and weave their coming of age stories together. Though merely children, Hansel and Gretel aren't given any mercy (which is yet another reason to live Grimm's fairy tales), and the entire novel is filled with incredible challenges that the reader can't help but wonder, "How in the world will they get out of this?"

Gidwitz also does a wonderful job of balancing dark with light with hilarious commentary throughout the entire novel.

Please Adam Gidwitz, write another one!

In other news...

So, so far this week has been rather uneventful. But, such is my life, really.

I've recently joined this one site called www.authonomy.com. It's actually pretty amazing. It's where writers can upload part or all or their novels and people can look at them and comment on them. Then, based off of how many people back your work, you can end up on the publishers desk of Harper Collins! I know it's unrealistic, but you should check it out. My novel is called Juliet and Romeo. It is unfinished, but I am really excited how it looks thus far.

Also, my teacher of my Advanced English class put me in a group assignment. Let me just say, that for me, group assignments suck. I would most likely rather pour acid into my eyes. It always ends up one of 4 ways:
1. I end up with people who literally don't do anything. And may not even know how to read.
2. I end up with people who disagree on the assignment, and none of them will waiver. Allowing for our group to get horrible grades because it is entirely uncollaborated on, and shows it.
3. I end up with someone I cannot stand, and have to grin and bear it, while envisioning either me running away screaming or me blowing a hole in their head.
4. I join a group, and no one else joins...thus I do more work, but am almost greatful that it didn't end up like the previous three.

And so my next group project has fallen under catagory 3. Enough said.
